Common Pregnancy Symptoms

Common Pregnancy Symptoms - Belly Bands

Any pregnancy is filled with aches, pains and strange sensations.

As an expectant mother, it is always worthwhile talking to a medical professional about your concerns and symptoms, but it is also valuable to realise that many sensations you will feel are perfectly normal and to be expected.

Here are some of the most common conditions that most mums-to-be will experience at some time through their pregnancies:

1. Morning Sickness

Whatever level of morning sickness you experience, it is regretfully normal. Ginger is a wonderful stomach soother, so make some hot tea with a couple of fresh slices and a teaspoon of honey. Peppermint and camomile teas are also soothing, and plenty of water is never a bad thing. If it becomes unbearable, talk to your doctor about a prescribed medication and try taking prenatal vitamin supplements and B6 in particular.

2. Energy Fluctuations

Strangely, it is the earliest stage of your baby’s growth that can sap your energy the most. Trying to push through can increase morning sickness as well as fatigue, listen to your body so embrace the siesta! Moving into your second trimester, you might find the opposite and your energy will peak. This may feel fantastic but be sure to manage it. You may think you can run a marathon with all this new energy, but just take it one step at a time. Over-exertion can have many negative impacts, so always take it easy.

3. Pregnancy Swelling

There’s something growing inside you, so of course you’re going to swell! But swelling can also affect your limbs, especially the feet and ankles. This is also normal, as your body retains far more liquid through your pregnancy, so drink plenty of water. If you’re having a particularly tender day, lie down and raise your legs on pillows. This relieves pressure and allows fluid to be circulated. We recommend Belly Bands Compression Stockings to ease fluid flow to your feet.

4. Round Ligament Pain

This symptom often triggers concern for expectant mums. Your body is constantly changing and can be placed under a lot of strain. Round ligament pain is caused by your expanding uterus tugging on the surrounding tissues causing tight, crampy pains which can be somewhat uncomfortable. A Belly Band is an excellent way to ease these pains, giving your tummy some added support to reduce that tight sensation.

5. Running Out of Room

Your uterus is expanding, compressing organs, including bladder, stomach and lungs. Peeing more, shortness of breath, heartburn, constipation and bloating can all result from your increasingly crowded insides!

Meditation and breathing exercises can help ease some of this discomfort. Stay hydrated and up your fibre intake to keep things moving. For bloating, ease up on dairy, gassy foods such as beans and cabbage, and particularly rich or sugary foods. Try adding sauerkraut to your meals or drinking kombucha to improve gut health. Belly Bands Gas & Bloating Herbal Tea has been specifically blended to relieve these symptoms and gives you a blissful excuse to take some time for you. Though unlikely, some of these symptoms can be early signs of more serious matters, such as preeclampsia, so it’s well worth consulting your doctor if they persist.

6. Breast Tenderness

While much of the tenderness will happen early on, as you get closer to your due date, your mammary glands will swell in readiness for little one’s first meal. Extra support is essential, ideally with a professionally-fitted maternity bra or secure sports bra. In the last few weeks of pregnancy, while most mothers won’t actually begin lactating until after birth, you may possibly find it necessary to express some milk if it has come in early. Again, consult your obstetrician for advice.

7. Braxton Hicks

This is one of the most alarming symptoms of all, but is both easily managed and perfectly normal. Some mummas panic that they are going into early labour with their first Braxton Hicks contractions, but it is nothing more than your body practicing its moves for the future. Generally painless, they create a tightening feeling in your lower abdomen and can be eased with light exercise, plenty of water and a Belly Band. Within a short time, they will become familiar, manageable and may ease completely.

Pregnancy is a period of physical and chemical change for your body. It is to be expected that your body will feel unusual at times and experience numerous new sensations. The first rule is to accept this as simply part of the journey.

The second and most important rule is to listen to your body. If you are concerned or feel anything new, painful or persistent, never be afraid to consult a medical professional immediately.
